potential Solutions

Although there is a growing demand for women in the stem field it is important to note that these statistics are not global, and some geographical areas still suffer from lack of representation when it comes to women in this field. In the world the regional average of female researchers, varying in the STEM field specifically science, there are only 28.8 percent that focus on research based on data taken in 2015. This is based on women researchers that are full-time and part-time, leaving 71.2 percent of representation in the research department to men. Research is often the foundation of many new findings in science and it is important to start the representation early on so that more women become interested in the process. Because of social bias it is difficult to picture a woman in the stem field, after all it was something only men can do for so many years, as it was seen that men have an innate ability for anything stem related.

Future research may focus on searching other careers and majors that may also be experiencing issues in the field. Seeing as the majority of this group consists of STEM majors, specifically many pursuing medicine, this was a topic that hit close to home. Usually, most students are restricted to their major and future career choice and may not really be aware of the different fields and their issues. Exploring different majors and careers that are gender specific can help increase awareness in not only STEM majors but also a myriad of other choices.

Based on the data recorded from the research, surveys, and interviews conducted, we have found that the problem at hand is not one that can be solved shorterm, but rather long-term. This problem will require increased awareness in both men and women in the FIU community and eventually branch out into the community. Awareness can be brought to this campus by hanging posters around the university encouraging women to pursue STEM related careers(for example Medicine). Also, possible honors hour lectures  can be centered over gaining awareness in the minority women are in medicine and science. Points may be offered for these events that can serve as a motivator for students to attend and become more educated in this topic.
